A debate has recently arisen on the subject of ‘Ethical Funding’ In the London office, so I thought I would provide some comment from the perspective of the African office. As an ex-pat living and working here for some years now, one thing stands out with all these debates raging in the Northern Hemisphere and [...] An unexpected consequence of our previous article outlining our design for the power plant at the new site here in Botswana has been alacratas, being engaged to design and implement large, grid connected versions in Angola as well as smaller systems for ‘new towns’ to be constructed nationwide. The new towns will comprise in total 1 [...] There are many programs for helping developing nations trade with the developed world including the Fair Trade program but these are limited in how many they can assist and to what level. What is needed is to provide these primarily rural communities with the ability to trade directly, without the middle men taking their cut [...] For all the hype in the developed world the truth of the matter is, half the worlds population have never made a telephone call….. There has been an explosion in telecoms uptake in Africa in recent years mainly due to cell phone penetration with the majority of this business in the pre-paid market, but the cost [...] To answer this question will take several posts so let me give an outline here. In a nutshell, the developed world only sees major infrastructure projects as being the answer to the issues of the developing world. Although one could argue these projects are necessary you must look at the lowest common denominators to the bigger [...] As we have been progressing with our planned roll-out across sub-Saharan Africa, one thing which keeps cropping up is the issue of power particularly in the rural areas which is also where we have to build our data centers. So we decided upon Solar power but then the issue of what happens when the sun [...] Have you ever considered the hype surrounding the title above not to mention the billions of Dollars proposed to resolve the problem? One cannot help but question the the people and organizations acting upon the issue. For instance, how many have actually lived in one of these places to experience the issues involved let alone talk [...] |
